Droopy eyelids can be very embarrassing and can easily make a person appear aged well beyond their years and very tired looking. Droopy eyes can be caused by a variety of conditions including aging, lifestyle, genetics, diabetes, stroke, Horner syndrome, myasthenia gravis, or a brain tumor or other cancer that affects nerve or muscle reactions. Here are some common causes:-
Both sagging eyelids:
• Medical conditions such as: myasthenia gravis, ptosis
• Migraine headaches
• Normal aging process
• Normal variation of the eyelids
One sagging eyelid:
• Growth in the eyelid, such as a stye
• Medical issues
• Nerve injuries
• Normal aging process
Droopy eyelids usually starts from around the age of 40 and worsens with increasing age, however many younger aged people have noticed sagging eyelids from around the age of around 30 onwards- eek!
Researchers have found a genetic trait that seems to be related to droopy eyelids- look at your parents and you will have a pretty good indicator on whether or not you’ll develop droopy eyes! Did you know men are also more prone to sagging eyelids than us women. It is estimated that inherited factors account for 61 percent of the risk of sagging eyelids, with the rest of the risk influenced by factors such as age, gender and lifestyle (smoking, sun damage and diet/ obesity)
Lighter skin colours are also more prone to droopy eyelids.
Severe eyelid sagging can be linked to problems such as blocked vision and headaches from trying to keep your eyes open wide enough to see more clearly.
Do daily exercises to help strengthen the muscles in your eyelids and tone loose skin that may have begun to sag. The Eva Fraser Fitness Center in London, England, reports that performing eyelid exercises for 10 minutes each day, at least four days a week, can help some people tighten the loose skin on their eyelids. Raise your eyebrows and put a finger under your brow bone to hold the skin in place. Close your eyes in several incremental movements, rather than one sweeping motion, and hold the position for six seconds. You should feel the pull of your lids as your keep your finger in place. Open your eyes, and repeat!
Opt for a cosmetic procedure called a blepharoplasty to tighten loose skin on your eyelids. This type of plastic surgery is used to remove fat, skin and muscle that droops in the eyelid area (see our previous blog on blepharoplasty)
Laser resurfacing- such as fractional co2.
Botox can raise the upper eyelid slightly and also injectable fillers.
Avoid salty foods, have a great nutritional diet, get plently of sleep, drink lots of water and limit the amount of alcohol you consume.
